What is NDIS?

NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is intended to provide funding to people under the age of 65 with permanent and significant disabilities so that they can obtain the necessary support and services.

The NDIS will pay for the assistance required to maintain independence and build strong community networks. Examples of such assistance includes support services from qualified staff/agencies to help with your daily activities, structural changes to your bathroom so you can shower yourself, assistance with securing wheelchairs, finding you an appropriate job if you are interested, and effective integration into the local community.

The range of customized services that match the needs and requirements of the participant include:

Advice, information, and referral services for NDIS participants and their families' carer(s)

Referral to relevant disability, mainstream, crises intervention, and community services and supports

Links and support to access community services and activities

Help to build individual capacity through support such as diagnosis advice, peer support, and skills development

Individualized plans that include goals and aspirations

Assistive technology, equipment, and programs.

Funding amounts are based on what is reasonable and necessary for participants to achieve their goals, as well as on if they have help from friends, family or other government supports. NDIS funding is broken up into separate budgets, and the approved amounts in each will differ from participant to participant.
